Curriculum Intent

At St Basil’s we follow the National Curriculum for the teaching of Science. Our aim is to make science enjoyable for children and provide a practical experience to develop their love of science. We believe that it is important for children to have experience of using a range of scientific equipment to support their enquiries. At St Basil’s we believe that the study of science makes a valuable contribution to their understanding of all aspects of life giving a sense of curiosity and enrichment.

Aims of our Science Curriculum

  • To secure children’s knowledge in science to enable them to develop as effective scientific thinkers
  • To nurture children’s natural curiosity and their on-going intellectual development.
  • To develop children’s skills to be able to work scientifically, utilising their learnt knowledge.
  • To provide children with opportunities to investigate and explore key scientific principles through practical experiences.
  • To enable children to use their science skills in relation to everyday life to support their understanding of the world around them.
  • To enthuse children in their learning, exposing them to the work of well-known scientists, in order to promote a lifelong love of the subject.
