Curriculum Intent

At St Basil’s we believe that Art and Design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a special way of understanding and responding to the world and enables children to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes.

At St Basil’s we believe that the study of Art and Design makes a valuable contribution to pupil understanding of our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Aims of our Art & Design Curriculum

Using the Programs of Study from the National Curriculum, the aims of the Art and Design curriculum are to ensure that all pupils:

  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other Art and Design, craft and design techniques
  • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of Art and Design, craft and design
  • know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their Art and Design forms.
