Geography

Geography Intent

At St Basil’s we believe that geography should stimulate curiosity and imagination of our common home and its people. We aim to build upon a child's ‘personal geography’ in their local area, country and world with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments. Through this, pupils will develop geographical skills, understanding and knowledge of key concepts to enable them to be lifelong explorers of our natural and human world.

At St Basil’s, pupils will gain the skills and understanding of Geographical concepts and build knowledge of their own country and the wider world, the interaction of human and physical features of the world, and the comparison of Geographical places or spaces.

Aims of our Geography Curriculum

  • To make sense of their own surroundings through learning about their own locality, and the interaction between people and environment.
  • To extend their interest, knowledge and understanding of contrasting localities in Britain, Europe and the rest of the world.
  • To appreciate similarity and difference in the world around them and to respect other people’s beliefs, attitudes and values.
  • Develop understanding in the disciplinary concepts of: Scale, Space, Place, Physical & Human Processes, Interconnections, Environmental Impact, and Cultural Awareness & Diversity
  • Develop understanding in the substantive concepts of:
    • The role of movement in trade and migration
    • The role of sustainability in serving our common home
    • The importance of rivers in our local area, country and the wider world
    • The impact of weather & climate on our world and its populations
  • To develop the geographical skills and vocabulary necessary to carry out effective geographical enquiry: interpreting the world around them through fieldwork; enquiring about change and communicating what they have found.
  • To develop interest and enjoyment of geographical experiences and build confidence and understanding in an outdoor environment.
