Curriculum Intent

At St Basil’s Catholic Primary School our intention for the modern foreign languages curriculum is the following:

  • to develop the children’s knowledge of the French language in order for them to develop their confidence at communicating in French.
  • to foster a curiosity and respect for the world’s cultures and deepen the children’s understanding of the world.
  • to encourage children to explore and develop new ways of thinking when using new languages and make links with our own language to enhance their skills.
  • to encourage a love of language learning, providing the foundations for further language learning and even study and work in other countries.

we believe a high-quality languages (MFL) curriculum should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. Learning a foreign language provides an opening to other cultures and is vital for children in todays modern global workplace and society. Our high-quality languages teaching, and curriculum will foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. Our specialist teaching will enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in French and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.

To support the children in French language and culture, we hold French Breakfast once a year, when the children have the opportunity to immerse themselves more in French life by having the chance to taste some typical French foods, explore the country online and learn information about some key aspects of life in France.
