Welcome to 5AW & 5CE!

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We would like to extend our greetings as your child’s new class teachers Mr Wood and Mrs Edwards.

It is an important year in their school life as they grow and mature towards the end of their time in Primary school. This letter will give you some of the important information ready for the year.

This year we will developing new skills in Maths and English; covering exciting topics such as World War 2, The Saxons and The Amazon in Learning Challenge; and investigating Forces, Space and Animal Life in Science.

Our P.E. lessons will usually take place on Monday and Wednesday, but please ensure your child’s kit is in school at all times, both indoor and outdoor ready (pumps and trainers).

This needs to be in a clearly named small drawstring bag, with their name also clearly marked on each item inside.

Reading Books

It is crucial that you continue to read with your child at home regularly. Your child’s school reading book will be brought home and needs to be back in to school every day. It is expected that children are recording at least 3 nights of reading each week, either independently or with an adult at home. If children are reading independently, diaries need to be signed by an adult to confirm.

Homework will be given out weekly for Maths and English, including a weekly spelling test. Learning Challenge and Science homework will be covered by a matrix of activities each half term.

A piece from this matrix is expected on Monday every two weeks.

Subject Given Out Due
English Wednesday Monday
Maths Wednesday Monday
Spelling Friday Test following Friday
Learning Challenge Every Half Term Every other Monday

Break time

Your child needs a water bottle in school every day for their own use. If they wish to bring a snack for break time please ensure that this is a healthy choice.

  • We have two trips this half term. Our first Year 5 trip will be on Friday 4th October, visiting Jodrell Bank Observatory as part of our topic ‘What else is out there?’ all about the earth and space.
  • As part of national democracy week, Year 5 will also visit the Town Hall on Thursday 17th October to learn about Democracy and Law.
  • Both trips are now live on the school gateway; please ensure that you complete this as soon as possible.

Meet the Teacher

We will be opening our classrooms for a ‘Meet the Teacher’ after school on Monday 9th September. If you have any questions about the upcoming year please feel free to come and see us. We hope to see you there.

Kind regards,

Mr Wood and Mrs Rowland
